All patrons subject to search upon venue entry. \n*** \n \n*** \nWaxahatchee \n \nWebsite\nFacebook\nTwitter \nWhat do we hold on to from our past? What must we let go of to truly move forward? \nWaxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield\, a lyricist who has always let her listeners know exactly where she is at a given moment\, spent much of 2018 reckoning with these questions and revisiting her roots to look for answers. The result is Saint Cloud\, an intimate journey through the places she’s been\, filled with the people she’s loved. \nWritten immediately in the period following her decision to get sober\, the album is an unflinching self-examination. From a moment of reckoning in Barcelona to a tourist trap in Tennessee to a painful confrontation on Arkadelphia Road\, from a nostalgic jaunt down 7th Street in New York City to the Mississippi Gulf\, Crutchfield creates a sense of place for her soul-baring tales\, a longtime staple of her storytelling. \nThis raw\, exposed narrative terrain is aided by a shift in sonic arrangements as well. While her last two records featured the kind of big guitars\, well-honed noise\, and battering sounds that characterized her Philadelphia scene and strongly influenced a burgeoning new class of singer-songwriters\, Saint Cloud strips back those layers to create space for Crutchfield’s voice and lyrics. The result is a classic Americana sound with modern touches befitting an artist who has emerged as one of the signature storytellers of her time. \nFrom the origins of her band name—the beloved creek behind her childhood home—to scene-setting classics like “Noccalula” and “Sparks Fly\,” listening to Waxahatchee has always felt like being invited along on a journey with a steely-eyed navigator. On Saint Cloud\, Crutchfield adds a new sense of perspective to her travels. Reflecting on this\, she says\, “I think all of my records are turbulent and emotional\, but this one feels like it has a little dose of enlightenment. It feels a little more calm and less reckless.” \nMany of the narratives on Saint Cloud concern addiction and the havoc it wreaks on ourselves and our loved ones\, as Crutchfield comes to a deeper understanding of love not only for those around her but for herself. This coalesces most clearly on “Fire\,” which she says was literally written in transit\, during a drive over the Mississippi River into West Memphis\, and serves as a love song to herself\, a paean to moving past shame into a place of unconditional self-acceptance. Coming from a songwriter long accustomed to looking in other directions for love\, it’s a stirring moment when Crutchfield sings\, “I take it for granted/If I could love you unconditionally/I could iron out the edges of the darkest sky.” \nWhich is not to say that Saint Cloud lacks Crutchfield’s signature poetry on matters of romantic love. Still\, her personal evolution in this area is evident too\, as this time around\, Crutchfield examines what it really means to be with someone and how it feels to see our own patterns more clearly. On “Hell\,” she sings: “I hover above like a deity/But you don’t worship me\, you don’t worship me/You strip the illusion\, you did it well/I’ll put you through hell.” \nCrutchfield also looks at what it’s like to be romantically involved with another artist\, someone in search of their own truth\, on “The Eye”: “Our feet don’t ever touch the ground/Run ourselves ragged town to town/Chasing uncertainty around\, a siren sound” and “We leave love behind without a tear or a long goodbye/as we wait for lightning to strike/We are enthralled by the calling of the eye.” \nAnd of course\, even when Crutchfield is taking a more nuanced approach to love\, her ease with all-encompassing sentiments is still clear\, with lines like “I give it to you all on a dime/I love you till the day I die” which sound culled from a classic torch song. \nOver the course of Saint Cloud’s 11 songs\, which were recorded in the summer of 2019 at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo\, TX\, and Long Pond in Stuyvesant\, NY\, and produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver\, Big Red Machine)\, Crutchfield peels back the distortion of electric guitars to create a wider sonic palette than on any previous Waxahatchee album. It is a record filled with nods to classic country (like the honky tonk ease of “Can’t Do Much”)\, folk-inspired tones (heard in the confessional lilt of “St. Cloud”)\, and distinctly modern touches (like the pulsating minimalism of “Fire”). \nTo bolster her vision\, Crutchfield enlisted Bobby Colombo and Bill Lennox\, both of the Detroit-based band Bonny Doon\, to serve as her backing band on the record\, along with Josh Kaufman (Hiss Golden Messenger\, Bonny Light Horseman) on guitar and keyboards and Nick Kinsey (Kevin Morby\, Elvis Perkins) on drums and percussion. Bonny Doon will also perform as Crutchfield’s live band during her extensive tours planned for 2020\, which include the US and Europe. \nSaint Cloud marks the beginning of a journey for Crutchfield\, one that sees her leaving behind past vices and the comfortable environs of her Philadelphia scene to head south in search of something new. If on her previous work Crutchfield was out in the storm\, she’s now firmly in the eye of it\, taking stock of her past with a clear perspective and gathering the strength to carry onward. \n*****************************************************************************************\nSaint Cloud was released on March 27th\, 2020 on Merge Records. \n*** \nKaty Kirby \n \nWebsite\nFacebook\nTwitter \nKaty Kirby is a songwriter and indie rock practitioner with an affinity for unspoken rules\, misunderstanding\, and boredom. She was born\, raised\, and homeschooled by two ex-cheerleaders in small-town Texas and started singing in church\, amidst the pasteurized-pop choruses of evangelical worship\, about which she shares acute perceptions. \nLike many bible belt late-millennials\, Katy grew up on a strict diet of this dependably uncool genre. She recalls\, “In the mid-90s\, the American evangelical church was making music of an extraordinarily digestible\, almost unprecedentedly easy-listening kind\, stylistically void and vaguely dubbed Christian Contemporary Music\, or CCM. It was pop that wasn’t quite pop\, determinedly hanging on to the openhearted melodies of a decade prior\, straightforward so as to be easily memorable\, and in a key that an average churchgoer could sing along to.” \nAccordingly\, Cool Dry Place finds her dismantling it. “I can hear myself negotiating with that worship-ish music\, fighting that deeply internalized impulse to make things that are super pleasant or approachable.” She hasn’t fully overcome the itch to please\, but to a listener’s benefit. Instead of eradicating the pop sensibilities of her past\, she warps them\, lacing sugary hooks with sneaky\, virulent rage\, twisting affectionate tones into matter-of-fact reproach\, and planting seemingly serene melodies with sonic jabs. The fun is in the clash. \nTake “Portals” for example\, a song of country-traditional chords and gentle vocal delivery that might have easily materialized as a placid ballad. Rather\, Katy drenched its soft core in metallic noise and oscillating string textures. You can imagine someone bussing glassware from a table nearby\, while Katy sits you down at a booth and trusts you with notes on a pre-breakup\, the first couple of minutes living in the last part of a relationship. \nWith the same masterful trickery\, “Traffic!” juxtaposes sound and sentiment\, a jittery combination of saturated pop and Rainforest Cafe’ faux-tropicalia projecting (arguably false) sympathy toward a character absorbed in his own self-inflicted misery. Though her chorus wails jubilant\, Katy weaponizes its catchy gusts to criticize privilege: “Nobody has it better than you.” \nKaty’s residual ties to church life are audial alone; spiritually\, she has worked to detach. “Until a couple of years ago\, I spent much of my time falling out of love with God. My life until then hadn’t just been participating in a church so much as completely\, profoundly believing—youth group\, sure\, but also a few attempts to cast out demons. Learning how to think or see things outside of that very intense\, clarified space was like rewiring my brain. I guess that if there’s one thing that unifies these songs\, it’s that they’re figuring out what to do\, or how to love\, or who to rely on outside of that context.” \nThe nine tracks that make up Cool Dry Place are miscellaneous in subject (motherhood\, late capitalism\, disintegrating relationships\,) but unified by the angle from which they’re told\, from a person re-learning to process life with intense attention. Each song is a catalog of fragments\, the number of segments in an orange or the cut of an obsessively-worn shirt\, distilled into meditations on the bizarre and microscopic exchanges that make up modern life — a relationship splintering\, an uncomfortable pause\, an understanding finally found. These emotional dioramas are moderated by the angular storytelling that unites Gillian Welch and Phoebe Bridgers\, a favor for the conventions of short fiction over confession. \nKirby readily admits that Cool Dry Place feels like a late-bloomer’s record. “These songs were written and recorded over an embarrassingly long period of time\, by a few different versions of myself.” The album began in Nashville years ago. Kirby had moved there for college\, changed majors five times\, briefly dropped out\, and finally graduated with a handful of songs\, a circle of artistic allies\, an amorphous collection of leftist beliefs\, and an English degree. She flailed in the solo-artist archetype for a period of time before turning to friends capable of constructing a satisfying full length. Kirby\, Alberto\, Hunt\, Logan\, and Zook spent over a year carving out bits of spare time to record in bedroom studios\, living rooms\, and a now-demolished former residence of Keith Urban. Tracking was finally completed over Thanksgiving 2019 at Kirby’s childhood home outside of Austin. \nAs its title track flips the advisory on a package of Tylenol into a hymn to human need for protection and acceptance\, Cool Dry Place asks a listener to embrace the precious and contradictory nature of being a person. Katy Kirby is an artist simultaneously tender and angry\, vulnerable and protected\, calculated and resigned.

Like\, they would drop down and dangle in my face as a baby\, or they’d get in my bed.” \nBut the powerhouse singer-bassist of retro-rock band Shannon & The Clams had bigger fears when she went to an astrologer two years ago. Shaw was at an emotional tipping point — willing to try anything — because everything she loved was falling apart. \n“It felt like the end of an era\,” Shaw says\, which began to unravel in 2016 with the tragic Ghost Ship warehouse fire in the Clams’ DIY community in Oakland. In 2018\, the California wildfires in Napa almost caused her parents to evacuate their homes. In 2019\, a lurking intruder drove Shaw out of the beloved apartment she’d lived in for 14 years. And then\, right as her band was getting invited on big tours with bands like Greta Van Fleet and The Black Keys\, her father was diagnosed with cancer. “The idea of leaving my family was agonizing — it was torture\,” Shaw says. \nThe astrologer told her to summon Durga when she felt powerless\, a Hindu goddess who holds a weapon in each of her eight arms. Shaw saw the connection. “The symbolism of the spider made a full turn in an interesting way\,” she says. “I was getting protection from the thing I feared the most.” Plus\, she says with a laugh\, “Spiders destroy the bullshit bugs. Like mosquitoes. Who needs ‘em?” \nYear Of The Spider\, the band’s sixth studio album\, rages against death and disease with the power of a thousand angry Ronettes. Songs like “All Of My Cryin’\,” “Mary\, Don’t Go\,” and “Year Of The Spider\,” pulse with girl-group elegance and punk ferocity. On a Clams record\, you always get both. \nThat harsh/soft balance often comes down to Clams keyboardist Will Sprott. “Different keyboards lend themselves to different tones\,” Sprott says\, “a Rhodes [piano] is more soft and bell-like\, whereas a Wurlitzer has these chunky\, abrasive bites. So when I’m deciding which instrument to play on a song\, I’m thinking\, what does the song make you feel? What do you want it to communicate? It’s like\, do you want this organ to scream at you or soothe you?” \nOn the album opener\, it was a little bit of both. “Do I Wanna Stay” is a slow tango between Shaw’s voice and Sprott’s piano that builds to a break point when Shaw rasps\, “I dream at night…” sounding like someone whittled Brenda Lee into a shiv. \n“We went line by line with a fine-toothed comb to make sure the instrumentation matched each scene\, almost like a movie\,” Sprott says\, adding\, “That’s one thing about having Dan [Auerbach] as your producer — he is really good at seeing an overall vision of the sound — knowing when and where to add or remove certain layers.” \nDrummer Nate Mahan agreed\, saying “Stay” was a true collaboration. “Shannon had a very unique idea about the tempo of that song that we had to work out with Dan … The timing took us quite a while to get right\, but I’m really proud of how it came out.” \nWhen Mahan moved to Oakland in 2007\, he was a fan of the band before he joined. “I was in a lot of improvisational and noise bands in a city that has every micro-genre you can imagine floating around … Shannon and the Clams stuck out to me because they had great songs with great singers\, which I thought that really lacking in Oakland at the time.” \nMahan’s intuitive approach shines through on songs with dense imagery like\, “Mary Don’t Go” — one of Shaw and Auerbach’s favorites. “I wanted to leave space for the words and pull back [on the drums]\,” Mahan says. “When you slow the pace\, the words can feel more powerful.” \nOn “Godstone\,” which tells the story of a surreal underwater encounter Shaw had in Hawaii\, Mahan ditched the drums completely and played a halting\, horn-like piano line while Sprott added the eerie arpeggiated synths. \nThe other source of the Clams’ signature sound comes from the decade-long creative partnership between Shaw and Clams’ guitarist Cody Blanchard. In “I Need You Bad\,” their voices lock into bewitching minor chords. “It’s like a zipper when we sing together\,” Shaw said\, “I think we have a blood harmony\, though we’re not related.” Bands that do have blood harmonies — the Everly Brothers\, the BeeGees — are major musical touchstones for them. But unlike those groups\, Shaw\, Blanchard are close friends. They live 15 minutes away from each other and when both are in town\, will rehearse in the goat shed turned recording studio that Blanchard built in his yard. \nBlanchard mixed Spider at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Studios the same week tornadoes devastated parts of Nashville right before the COVID-19 shutdowns in early 2020. He also wrote and sings lead on roughly half the songs on Spider. His songs\, like “Flowers Will Return” and “In The Hills\, In The Pines\,” have swelling pop arrangements and a mysteriously sparse falsetto\, reminiscent of bands like The Hollies and The Association. \nAs a songwriter\, Blanchard said he can get neurotic\, so he tried Dolly Parton’s trick: writing songs from another person’s point of view. It worked\, yielding some of Spider’s darkest songs: the howling “Crawl\,” which has a roiling hard-rock guitar (“that was really fun — just a classic\, rippin’ ‘70s guitar solo”) and the album’s first single\, “Midnight Wine\,” a thundering baroque-pop number that was inspired by friends and people in the Oakland arts community who died of drug overdoses over the last few years. \n“I was thinking specifically of the feeling of alienation\,” said Blanchard. “Where it feels like nothing in society works for you. The only thing that makes sense is to get fucked up to the point where you don’t care if you die or not because life is too difficult and bleak.” \nSpider ends with the slinky Motown-esque\, “Vanishing.”Shaw dons her spiritual spider armor once more\, singing directly and poignantly to her father (who is doing well\, she said.) At first\, Shaw wondered if the lyrics were too personal to put on the record. \n“It’s very emotional\, very tender\,” she said. “I also had these ideas that made no sense\, like having the weird call-and-response\, but we made it work so it was one of those songs that gave me the chance to grow.” \n*** \nDelicate Steve \n \nWebsite\nFacebook\nTwitter \nTILL I BURN UP \n“In a time where nothing makes sense\, or when everyone is trying to make sense of everything\, even the right idea might not make perfect sense to everybody at that moment.” \nSteve Marion\, the songwriter\, guitarist\, and producer who has made four studio records of primarily word-less\, guitar-first music as Delicate Steve\, is talking about the bifurcated and reactionary culture of the moment. But by no coincidence he’s also describing musical moments that helped to inspire Till I Burn Up (Anti-\, 2019) his forthcoming LP. \nThe album name comes from a line in Dr. John’s “Walk on Guilded Splinters” where Steve misheard John’s actual phrase “Tit Alberta” as “Till I Burn Up.” But more than fodder for an album title\, John’s Gris Gris\, and records like it\, informed a new frame-of-mind for an artist who has historically set out to make a predetermined statement with every recording. \n“The idea of this young freak making Gris Gris in LA\, and nobody knowing what to do with it in 1968… He gave me confidence to be a little more freaky and abstract instead of quirky and nicely-packaged like my last album was.” Steve goes on to cite early records by Iggy Pop and Dylan and The Band’s electric tour that were panned at the time and lauded in hindsight. “There is a confidence that comes with abandoning the idea of wanting to create something that everyone might like to check out.” \nBut all is not bifurcated\, and we know two things can be true at once. The confidence necessary for Steve to make Till I Burn Up could also be self-inspired. Now nearly ten years into his career\, Steve is a cult artist of his time who has been called to record with his heroes (Paul Simon\, Kanye West) and contribute significantly to his contemporaries’ modern masterworks (Amen Dunes\, Freedom)\, all the while recording and releasing his own critically hailed work and sharing the stage with Tame Impala\, Mac DeMarco\, Growlers and others. \nThe artist whose songwriting and playing has been marked through by transcendent moments of buoyancy and joy has created a pulsing and propulsive record in Till I Burn Up. He put up at a studio in Woodstock and found himself playing Freddie Mercury’s Oberheim synthesizer and his guitar plugged into Robbie Robertson’s Fender amp. \nWith the intent to turn away from the times\, Steve managed instead to document the sound of this moment — the ever-undwinding feed that feeds the feedback loop of talking heads\, twitter tick-ticking like a bomb\, the timed drip- like morphine- of news breaking in our hands\, the party before the shoe drops\, our interior dialogue\, all the contradictions… \nA song called “Freedom” is underpinned by a grinding circular guitar line interrupted by what sounds like synthetic warning sirens. “Rat in the House”\, “Rubberneck”\, and “Madness” are blinkered dancefloor rippers suited for a bunker party. “Selfie of Man” recognizes the pervasive behavior and its result\, as a literal portrait of our times. It moves along in marched lockstep\, with inversely reflecting guitar lines. The album’s closer ‘Dream’ allows Steve and his listeners some free range. Until then\, each song is self-contained and self-referential — an ouroboros within a greater ouroboros called Till I Burn Up. \nThere are turns on Till I Burn Up as dark as anything Delicate Steve has recorded\, but not without reminders that a joy ride into an apocalypse is still a joy ride. Like the harrowing moment it documents\, Till I Burn Up would not be true if not imbued by contradiction. True to form\, this Delicate Steve record is a distillation.

ONE OF THEM TWICE! WE LIKE TOURING. WE TOUR A LOT. WE HAVE PLAYED ALMOST A THOUSAND SHOWS. FOR A MORE DETAILED AND PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY PLEASE CONTINUE READING. \nJukebox the Ghost’s latest record\, Off To The Races is a giddy\, vibrant collection of Jukebox the Ghost’s most bombastic\, colorful songs to date. Though it’s the fifth studio outing from this long-running trio of piano pop wizards\, it plays like an energetic debut album: Just as eager to please as it is eager to surprise you. Every generation has a band that puts a fresh twist on piano-rock\, and Jukebox the Ghost’s latest studio offering serves as a memorably vivid and kaleidoscopic step forward for the genre. \n From the opening vocal stack of “Jumpstarted\,” it’s obvious that Jukebox the Ghost has newfound confidence in embracing bold musical risks. A mishmash of modern pop\, retro vocals and classic rock indulgence\, it’s a head-spinning listen for the first go-round that the band describes as “what it’s like to be inside of Ben (Thornewill\, lead singer/pianist)’s brain.” A thickly-layered vocal intro builds into a showcase of Thornewill’s virtuosic classical piano chops and then abruptly vaults into a bouncy\, upbeat pop chorus led by Jesse Kristin’s punchy backbeat drumming. A synth solo enters and you’re suddenly in a section vaguely resembling hip-hop. The guitar solo kicks the door down and you’re front row at an arena rock show. Thornewill recorded over 170 vocal tracks in “Jumpstarted\,” and somehow you can hear them all. \n One influence stands out in particular as a common thread: Queen. This isn’t a matter of happenstance — The band has recently made a tradition of “HalloQueen\,” a yearly show where they perform two sets: One as themselves\, followed by a set break\, and one in costume (and in character) as Queen. Through being forced to do a deep dive into Queen’s catalogue\, the band says they ended up discovering themselves in the process. “Something magical about Queen to me is that their songs are so catchy\, but the song structures are so wonderfully wrong and they’re so unafraid to showcase their chops\,” said Tommy Siegel. “Their music is a reminder to me that pop music doesn’t have to come in a neat\, restrained package\,” added Thornewill\, “It’s ok to get weird and own it — And you can still be catchy.” \nThe second track from Off To The Races\, “Everybody’s Lonely” provides a mix of old and new\, evocative of Queen crossed with Walk the Moon. In addition to a distinctly modern pop chorus\, it also features a surprising time signature shift and a bridge that has more in common with “Bohemian Rhapsody” than it does current radio morés. And though Thornewill’s lyrics thumb their nose at modern pop radio\, it’s also easy to envision it becoming a modern pop hit in its own right. The third track\, a snarky ode to the 9-to-5 from guitarist/singer Tommy Siegel called “People Go Home” sounds like you’ve tuned into some 1970s AM radio station that’s been humming along in a parallel universe for decades\, an otherworldly early-Beatles-style track for the new millennium. The remainder of the record serves as a bright\, exciting showcase of the band’s well-honed sense of pop craft\, coated in thick harmony stacks that serve as a brand new instrument for the band\, dramatic cinematic climaxes\, and broad hooks that playfully nod to the past with a decisively modern sensibility. \nOff To The Races is their fifth studio outing\, mostly recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn and engineered\, produced and mixed by Chris Cubeta and Gary Atturio (two exceptions: “Everybody’s Lonely” was produced by CJ Baran and Peter Thomas and “Fred Astaire” was produced by Chris Wallace). Longtime fans will hear little bits of past Jukebox the Ghost embedded in the record blanketed in a fresh\, more colorful sonic palette. The flamboyance and quirkiness of Let Live and Let Ghosts (2008)\, the retro sensibility of Everything Under the Sun (2010)\, the concise modern pop smarts of their recent self-titled album (2014) and Safe Travels (2012) and the raw live energy of their live album Long Way Home (2016) are all on full display if you listen closely. \nThe album is the result of a three-year songwriting and recording process\, culled from dozens of demos that the band brought to the table. Recording in their home base of Brooklyn enabled them to do more outside-the-computer sonic experimentation and live performance than past records have afforded. “In ‘Boring’ we sent Tommy’s backing harmonies through a distorting rotary speaker which created this totally weird underwater sound\,” explained Jesse Kristin. “And for ‘See You Soon’ we ran an electronic tabla machine through an amplifier and then I played drums along with it. That’s the sort of thing I think we wouldn’t have spent the time to do on our other records.” \n Jukebox the Ghost formed in college in 2006 and has been a steadily growing cult favorite and a globally touring band ever since. Composed of Ben Thornewill (piano/vocals)\, Tommy Siegel (guitar/bass/vocals) and Jesse Kristin (drums/vocals)\, they have played over 1\,000 shows across the country and around the world over the course of their career. In addition to countless headlining tours\, they have also toured as openers alongside Ingrid Michaelson\, Ben Folds\, Guster\, Motion City Soundtrack\, A Great Big World and Jack’s Mannequin\, among others. In addition to festivals like Lollapalooza\, Outside Lands\, Bonnaroo\, and Bottlerock\, Jukebox the Ghost has also performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and Conan. \n*** \nLuke Null

The ocean was an abstract dread\, an obliterating void as untenable as outer space.\nIn January 2018 we went on tour. After years of scraping by\, we found our foot-ing with our fourth record Yours Conditionally. It was a commercial success that set us up to to play the biggest rooms of our career. But three shows in\, I developed a raging case of influenza. Each night I dragged myself onstage and croaked out the set in a de-lirium. After a particularly bad soundcheck\, Patrick asked me if we should cancel the show. I couldn’t imagine giving up the thing we’d work so hard to achieve. “I’ll be on stage even if you have to mic my coffin\,” I joked.\nThe next morning I fainted and had a seizure while grocery shopping for break-fast. Patrick carried me through the check-out lanes screaming for a doctor. I woke lat-er in a hospital bed. Patrick leaned over me\, crying. “That’s it\,” he said. “I’m canceling the tour. I thought you were dead. We’re quitting the band. I’m going to be an ac-countant.” But I was on the mend. We missed two shows and pressed on.\nDuring sound check at the 930 club\, Patrick stepped out to take a phone call. His father had been in the hospital all week\, but he had cancer and brief hospitalizations were routine. Back at the hotel that night\, Patrick poured two shots of whiskey and handed me one. “I’d like to toast my dad.” He said. “The doctors offered to put him on life-support to give me a chance to fly out there\, but I didn’t want him to suffer. In-stead I said goodbye.”\nPatrick went home to grieve with his family and rejoined us on the road two days later. I couldn’t believe how quickly our lives had unraveled in the midst of what was supposed to be a milestone in our career. As the tour continued\, we found refuge in playing music together. Songwriting had always been an extension of our inner-world. Now we retreated to that world every time we stepped onstage.\nAfter the final show of our tour in Austin\, we received another phone call. Pat-rick’s mother Karen was in the hospital on the brink of a stroke. We got on a plane and went straight to her bedside. Her recovery took weeks. In the hospital waiting room\, I wrote the opening line of “Matrimony II”: I only have certainty when you hold my hand.\nOn a hot July day\, after Karen’s return to good health\, we sailed as a family in-to the Pacific and scattered Edward’s ashes at sea. I marked our position on the chart with a small x. The album was already well under way. In that moment\, I realized what I wanted to call it.\nSwimmer is a tour of the darkest time in our lives. But it is not a dark record. Named for the feeling of suspension and upendedness that characterized this period\, it is the story of deep-rooted companionship strengthened by pain and loss. These songs carried us through our grief. It is us at our most vulnerable\, so we kept a small foot-print\, recording everything ourselves in our home studio. I set out to describe the love I have come to know after ten years of marriage\, when you can no longer re-member your life before that person\, when the spark of early attraction has been re-placed by a gravitational pull. \nSwimmer is available everywhere February 14\, 2020. \n*** \nMolly Burch \n \nWebsite\nFacebook\nTwitter \nIn a small-town South of Austin\, Texas vocalist and songwriter Molly Burch is relaxing in her sunny country home. The 27-year-old is enjoying the calm before the storm that will kick start when her much anticipated sophomore album First Flower hits the public. The Los Angeles native has found tranquility in the outskirts of Texas\, appreciating time on the front porch as cicadas sing in the distance behind her.\nBurch burst onto the music scene in 2017 with her debut album Please Be Mine\, a ten-track ode to unrequited romance that she wrote after studying Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. Please Be Mine earned praise from critics for her smoky\, effortless vocals and bleeding-heart lyrics.\n“I was really blown away with how many people told me that the music has helped them through their own break-up\,” she says of Please Be Mine. “I was just so moved by that. I never expected it. I was aware that people were actually listening to my music and having a positive experience\, so [with the next album] I wanted to reveal my own struggles with fear and anxiety.”\nAfter a year of touring Please Be Mine all over North America\, Europe and the UK\, Burch returned to Texas to decompress. All of a sudden\, she was devoid of stimulation with nothing but time on her hands.\n“I was scared of not being able to write a great follow-up album\,” Burch admits. “I was in that state\, but I had so much time that slowly I was able to get some music out of myself. I would force myself to write every day. I gave myself a regiment. Once I got a few songs\, then I had the confidence to keep going.”\nBurch bounced her ideas off her bandmate and boyfriend Dailey Toliver who would contribute guitar parts and orchestration suggestions. The hurricanes kept them locked at home\, where they forced themselves to record demos and pump out as much material as possible. Slowly\, the album took shape and First Flower became real. When it came time to record\, Burch chose to work with Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders in Austin.\nFirst Flower is a walk-through Burch’s most intimate thoughts. Unlike Please Be Mine\, which focused on the contentious depression of heartbreak\, First Flower explores broken friendships\, her relationship to her sister\, and\, more importantly\, how Burch learned to fight overwhelming anxiety. Burch is a soft-spoken\, careful person who shoves her nervousness away on a daily basis.\n“I feel like people don’t see me as a nervous person\,” Burch says. “They don’t realize how nervous I am. I am good at fighting past my inner anxieties. I struggle with the anticipation of experiences.”\nFirst Flower is a bright\, beautiful album peppered with moments of triumph. Burch’s voice is as strong and dexterous as ever\, displaying her incredible range and professionalism as a vocalist. Opening track “Candy” is a swinging\, playful hit\, while “Wild” deals with pushing away fear. Songs like “Next to Me” and “Dangerous Place” examine failure and distance\, and the title track “First Flower” is classic Burch\, a simple love song that makes your skin raise with goosebumps when she breaks into the chorus. But the album’s true stand-out is “To The Boys”\, a courageous\, sassy fuck-you to her own self-deprecation where she learns to love all the things she hated about herself. “I don’t need to scream to get my point across/I don’t need to yell to know that I’m the boss\,” she coos over a sparse guitar riff. “I’ve always been told my whole life to speak up\,” explains Burch. “I needed to embrace that and not care what people think.”\nThe album closes with “Every Little Thing”\, a haunting\, airy ballad that sounds like something Judy Garland would have sang while drowning her pain in pills and alcohol. First Flower is a shapely sonic stage to let Burch shine on. The composition and production carefully constructed to compliment and not over power.\n“I do not have the answers by any means\, but I wanted to talk about those imperfections\,” says Burch. “I wouldn’t want someone who listens to my music to think that I have it all figured out. I don’t. First Flower is me being transparent.”

Because the best Tinariwen music isn’t the music they perform in front of microphones. It’s the music they play at night around the fire\, back in their own country\, amongst themselves and at their own pace. \nHaving eaten\, and drunk their tea\, the men bring out their guitars\, chat\, remember old songs and let the music come. In those moments\, the music can become like the fire\, free\, magical and impossible to stuff into a box. It rises up like a shower of sparks or a state of grace\, without premeditation; the momentary manifestation of a friendship\, a community\, an environment\, a history; the revelatory connection with something that belongs only to them\, and goes beyond them. \nTheir discography stretching out over the last 17 years\, all the tours and the international recognition have changed nothing: Tinariwen are still a desert band\, only certain aspects of which the Western music industry can ever hope to capture and present. Tinariwen existed long before any of their albums were recorded\, and they still exist quite distinct from their discographic dimension. So\, the best Tinariwen album doesn’t exist. But it’s still worth trying to go and find it.
