Please note: box office is cash only. \n*** \nAustralia’s favourite psychedelic-dance pioneers\, Miami Horror\, are set to return in 2015 with an assured\, neoteric sound to cement their position as innovators in the electronic music world once again. \nThe past few years have seen the group release their highly anticipated debut\, Illumination\, to heady acclaim\, as well as relocate to the US after touring the world multiple times over. Settling in Los Angeles\, the four-piece quickly found inspiration in the glowing year-round Californian sun\, set up a home studio and eagerly started experimenting with new sounds and projects to ease their creative itch. \nAnchored by producer Ben Plant\, the band found it easy to make a home between Melbourne and Los Angeles\, mostly due to the elevated number of Australian artists such as Bag Raiders\, Anna Lunoe and Empire of the Sun\, along with friendly LA natives like Classix and Ariel Pink\, helping the band to quickly settle in. \n“We’ve found there was a strong scene and vibe in LA\, if you look at a lot of the alternative electronica and dance music coming from there it definitely has a sound – we love the weirdness and sunshine. It has been a strong influence on many of our favorite records and we wanted to allow the place to influence this record\, and it definitely has.” \nSpending the last three years crafting and perfecting new material glittered with dream-gazey synth and a matured approach to songwriting\, has delivered a new chapter in Miami Horror’s evolution. Providing insight into what is yet to come\, anthemic singles ‘Real Slow’\, ‘Colours In The Sky’ and ‘Wild Motion (Set It Free)’\, show off polished production with attention to detail that references their Australian context\, but re-establishes Miami Horror as an indie-electronica act at the forefront of the genre internationally. \nNow ready with a huge second studio album\, All Possible Futures is the result of the many dedicated sessions everywhere from Melbourne\, Los Angeles\, Paris and New York\, to cumulate a glowing collection of drifting electronica-infused new-wave that marks a definite coming of age for the band. \n“When I wrote the first record my musical influence was a quarter of what it is now. Illumination was written mostly between the ages of 21 to 23 and it came out when I was 24\, so this record reflects a big difference in terms of maturity.” \nArmed with Plant’s ripened perspective\, the band have effortlessly defined a new direction in their sound with All Possible Futures\, with the record showcasing an eclectic mix of influences from the Post-Disco and punk of Talking Heads\, New Order and INXS\, through to the pop influence of Michael Jackson\, Paul Simon\, Tears For Fears and the dreamy aesthetic of Fleetwood Mac; scattered across all 15 tracks. \nPlant describes the production process as one that was key to ensuring longevity and a sense of permanence for the new album\, a medium which they feel is still necessary for creating a story\, and an emotional connection with music. \n“We wanted to make something that lasts and grows the more you listen to it; we found a lot of fans overseas had been listening to our first album for years and that’s what made us realise the importance of making something permanent. We wanted to make an album that you could listen to over five years and still discover new sounds or favourite songs.” On the current state of the industry\, Plant goes further to explain that a shift in how people consume music affected the new album’s meaning. “We’ve seen the album format quiver and turn to a focus on artists writing one-off hits. We personally love albums and the story they can tell. A great album will still always stand out in history. Just like the boom of disco singles in the ‘70s and then again with house music\, we feel like this is a time where a lot of tracks will be lost amongst sands of time.” \nProving that time and introspective is key to creating their art\, Miami Horror’s eclectic mix of influences\, experimentation with developed songwriting\, and inspired new focus on identity has resulted in a progressive and heart-felt collection of songs that aim to break the mould and challenge the traditional constraints of physical time and space. A sensory voyage from start to finish\, 2015 belongs to Miami Horror.

However\, the duo’s music far transcends that distance. It’s easy to understand why A Prairie Home Companion declared that Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez are “21st century troubadours.” As JOHNNYSWIM\, they embody the tradition of the well-traveled singer-songwriter while cultivating a modern style that’s uniquely their own.  \nHeart Beats\, the duo’s debut for Big Picnic Records\, is the culmination of years spent shaping what Vogue calls an “infectious sound.” Of the 200-plus acts who performed at the 2013 Bonnaroo festival\, only JOHNNYSWIM could naturally conjure elements of rock\, blues\, boleros\, folk\, and contemporary R&B in their music. With just a guitar and the scintillating contrast of their voices\, the duo holds audiences spellbound. They are storytellers who create a sense of intimacy between them and the listener\, whether performing on The Today Show\, singing 333 feet underground in Tennessee’s Cumberland Caverns\, or illuminating the stage at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Their songs are shaped by universal truths. “It starts with a feeling we hope the listener will get when they hear the song\,” explains Abner about their songwriting process. “Sometimes it starts with a lyric\, sometimes with a chord progression\, or sometimes even with a picture\, but ultimately we start with an emotion.”  \nAbner and Amanda formed JOHNNYSWIM in Music City\, USA. The son of immigrants who fled Cuba for the southeast\, Abner had moved to Nashville to study and pursue music while Amanda’s family settled in Nashville after moving between Los Angeles and the northeast. Both inherited strong musical influences from their parents and both were driven by a desire to chart their own path in music. Abner attempted a solo career with a record label and Amanda had done some recording in New York but neither course was creatively satisfying. And then they met each other in 2005.  \nFueled by Nashville’s fervent music scene\, the two began writing songs that drew from and augmented each other’s musical strengths. “Nashville was our incubator\,” says Amanda. “It was a creative cocoon that allowed us to get out whatever was in us without the need to be ‘successful.’ It developed us in the best way. In Nashville\, I met so many amazing musicians who could care less if anyone ever knew their name. They loved music and that was that. It was so refreshing.” Adopting the name JOHNNYSWIM\, the duo self-released their debut EP 1-4 in 2008. A year later\, Abner and Amanda got married and relocated to Los Angeles.  \nTheir move to the west coast spawned another EP 5-8 (2010) along with the release of the “Bonsoir” / “Good News” single. They began to tour the U.S. and completed residences at Hotel Café in Los Angeles and Rockwood Music Hall in New York. Inspired by a whole new community of songwriters and musicians\, JOHNNYSWIM began working on their third EP. Ironically\, the first country song they ever wrote was penned in LA rather than Nashville. Long a staple of their live set\, the tune became the title track of Home\, Vol. 1 (2012). With a striking visual style complementing the raw yet soulful edge of their music\, JOHNNYSWIM found fans in the fashion industry and were invited to perform at events for Levi’s\, Louis Vuitton\, and Tommy Hilfiger. Their videos for “Bonsoir” and “Annie” evinced the emotional thrust of their music and revealed how well their magnetizing stage presence translated to the screen.  \nIn between touring and recording\, the duo teamed up with non-profit organizations like Visiting Orphans and Got Your Back Movement\, whose charitable efforts serve a number of communities around the world. Abner and Amanda explain\, “Humanitarian work was something we both have done separately for years\, so when we met and started singing together it came really naturally to look for places where we could serve. It’s as important to us as anything else we do\, and we’ve found that if you’re willing to go\, willing to serve\, willing to give\, the opportunities to do so will arise. The cliché is 100% true: you always come home having received so much more than you feel like you gave.” That spirit of giving has inspired some of JOHNNYSWIM’s most compelling compositions\, including the rousing\, inspirational “Hallelujah.” The duo donates each sale of the song to Visiting Orphans.  \nCourted by a number of record labels\, JOHNNYSWIM signed with Sony/RED-distributed Big Picnic Records in 2013. The partnership was struck at the end of a hugely prolific period for the duo that included starring roles in a Nashville production of Smokey Joe’s Café and a spot on the Old Crow Medicine Show’s sold-out tour of the U.K. Since then\, they’ve performed at MTV’s 2013 O Music Awards in Times Square while their songs have appeared in episodes of VH1’s Mob Wives and Black Ink Crew.  \nAbove all\, the love of writing\, recording\, and performing informs each new JOHNNYSWIM project. Largely recorded and produced at their home\, Heart Beats exhibits the duo’s ever-expanding stylistic range. Issued as a single and video\, the self-penned title track is accompanied by Abner and Amanda’s collaborations with fellow Nashville/LA transplants Josiah Bell and Britten Newbill. Co-written and co-produced with Bell\, “Don’t Let It Get You Down” exemplifies JOHNNYSWIM’s ability to render anthem-like melodies that immediately hook and bring audiences to their feet. “Nashvillians love good songs\,” says Amanda\, and Heart Beats is certainly full of them. Please note: box office is cash only. \n*** \nFrom Atlanta\, Georgia\, the origins of Deerhunter can be traced back to when frontman Bradford Cox first met guitarist Lockett Pundt at high school. Years later Bradford met Moses Archuleta and started jamming together. Other contributors to Deerhunter since its establishment in 2001 include Josh Fauver\, Colin Mee and Whitney Petty. The current incarnation consists of Cox\, Pundt and Archuleta plus bassist Josh Mckay and guitarist Frankie Broyles. \nDeerhunter’s first album was a lo-fi experiment not initially intended for the wider world\, but appeared in 2005 on a local Atlanta label\, Stickfigure. Although officially untitled\, it has since become known as Turn It Up\, Faggot; a phrase that doesn’t actually appear on the sleeve but is an insult that Cox claimed was often thrown at the band during their early gigs. Their next album\, Cryptograms (2006)\, was generally considered to be their real debut and as such things started to get serious for the band. They had moved to fêted Chicago indie\, Kranky (Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, Low\, Stars Of The Lid)\, and the world outside was starting to pay attention. \nThen in mid-2008\, Deerhunter and Kranky signed a deal with 4AD\, allowing them to finally release music outside the US and the band’s next move was to prove epic in more than just musical terms.?? Recorded over the course of a week at the Rare Book Studios in Brooklyn\, NY\, the Can and Wire-inspired Microcastle (2008) was to propel them to further heights. However\, the album leaked four months before release\, leading the band back to the studio to record Weird Era Cont.\, an album in its own right added as a bonus disc to make Microcastle a 25-track colossus. Not content with such prolificacy\, the band announced a new five track EP\, Rainwater Cassette Exchange\, in 2009 and that its release would coincide with the band’s extensive European\, Japanese and Australian tour in May and June.?? \nDisplaying few signs of slowing down\, Halcyon Digest\, the band’s fourth studio album was released in September 2010. Remaining in their native Georgia to piece together the album\, Halcyon Digest took just a few weeks to complete. The recording sessions took place at Chase Park Transduction in Athens with Ben H. Allen helping to co-produce the album\, while final track\, ‘He Would Have Laughed’\, was recorded separately by Bradford Cox at NOTOWN SOUND in Marietta. To announce the release\, the band fully embraced the DIY mindset of their New Wave heroes from the 70’s and 80’s with a Cox-designed\, cut-and-paste Xeroxed flyer. It’s with these kind of approaches that Deerhunter continue to widen their sphere of influence and impress with each subsequent release. \nAfter a brief hiatus\, during which time Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt released their own albums as Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza respectively\, a new Deerhunter line-up (with additions of bassist Josh Mckay and guitarist Frankie Broyles) reconvened in January 2013 at Rare Book Studio in Brooklyn\, New York. Produced by Nicholas Vernhes and Bradford Cox and recorded in the dead of night\, Deerhunter’s new longplayer Monomania will be released in May. Monomania finds the group recalling its scrappy punk aesthetic; a perfect nocturnal garage rock album full of the layered and hazy vintage guitar sounds that define them.

We know we love them: a punk band that uses acoustic guitar\, indie-rock dance grooves\, Springsteen-y keyboard lines (this they might deny). It’s hook-filled… it’s anthemic… it’s confessional. Maybe Joni Mitchell by way of Green Day? They must have heard some Replacements along the way\, and it seems like what Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers did for the Boston suburbs these guys are doing for Bergen County\, NJ. But they still leave us scratching our heads. Just what the hell have the Front Bottoms alchemized? \n“We like to keep it familiar so that it’s not too intimidating\,” says singer-guitarist Brian Sella\, “but we always make sure it’s not immediately recognizable.” It’s true\, you just can’t quite put your finger on ‘em but Bar/None Records invites you to try to peg these guys with the release of their self-titled debut The Front Bottoms. \nBrian Sella and drummer-bullhornist Mathew Uychich have known each other since they were 10 and 8 years old respectively and have been making music for a lot of that time. It shows in the rich hooks and clever rhythms and the effortless way they string riffs together into surprising song structures. Take a song like “Maps” – it opens with half a Sex Pistols riff before going into an orchestral flourish on keyboards. Then there’s a verse complete with a hillbilly hiccup in the vocal followed by an arpeggio guitar part and full-on raging synthetic strings that lurch into handclaps and an enigmatic chorus “one day you’ll be washing yourself with hand soap in a public bathroom\,” And that’s in the first minute and a half of the song. \nLyrically Brian Sella fires off scattershot images that the listener can gather up and make sense of like working puzzle pieces on the floor. Romance\, freedom\, paranoia\, partying and somehow getting clean all tumble together from song to song. \n“I’m swinging like a fist fight concrete colored basement all right\, let’s keep this as clean as clean as you like” (“Looking Like You Just Woke Up”) \n“I’m a creature of a culture I created/ I’m the last one on the dance floor as the chandelier gives way and I am permanently preoccupied with your past.” (“Swimming Pool”) \n“A lot of the kids we graduated with are homeless which puts them in shady situations with shady people….” (Flashlight”) \nIn “The Beers\,” the narrator surveys said beverage “in coffee mugs\, water bottles and soda cups” in the cinematic residue of a basement party. He recalls beefing up for a Jersey Shore summer of steroids “because you like a man with muscles and I like you.” In “Father\,” the narrator dreams about beating his father with a baseball bat then tries to find solace in his girlfriend’s bed before musing about his ancestral bloodline\, “You look good tonight\, girlfriend. Can I sleep in your bed? / And when I crawl out in the morning can I stay inside your head? Cause you were high school and I was just more like real life…”Matt and Brian started out playing a couple times a year for high school talent shows\, learning a cover song and writing a crappy original each time. “I think we did Modest Mouse ‘Out of Gas’ one year and Green Day ‘Hitchin a Ride’ another year\,” recalls Brian. This led to Brian’s mom presenting him with three hours of professional recording studio time for Christmas one year. “We went in and the guy showed us how to set up. He pressed ‘record’ and left the room. We recorded 12 songs without stopping.” And thus with enough original songs to play a full set\, the Front Bottoms were officially born. Their first club date was an all-ages show at the Main Stage in Pompton Lakes\, NJ. Most of the bands were teen punk bands. Casey Lee Morgan who was doing sound at the club befriended them\, giving them some faint praise\, telling them like they might not be very good but they were better than all the other bands that night. Eventually\, Casey would record them in his basement studio. Much of the music on the Front Bottoms debut was recorded by Casey. \nThe Front Bottoms bounced around Bergen County\, eventually branching out making connections in the DIY concert community that has included everything from punk flop houses\, VFW halls and fire stations. That circuit got them from New England to Florida\, starting in a Ford Escort eventually moving up to an 1989 Econoline van. Mathew’s brother (also named Brian) played keyboards for a while but left amicably after an onstage fistfight and the realization he preferred staying home making pot roasts to playing far flung punk squats. The image of “washing yourself with hand soap in a public bathroom” is the blessing and curse of the freedom and funkiness of life on the lo-fi road. More recently\, Drew Villafuerte has been sitting in on bass and keyboards for select shows. \nWith the wonders of the internet and their obsessive gigging\, they are now known from New Jersey to…Spain (?) where director Pablo Nieto found them online and asked to create a video for “Maps.” The video features Williamsburg\, a farm (where Mathew sometimes works)\, and that aforementioned Econoline as well as some “loveable” hand puppets. Word of mouth and great reviews has them fielding calls from promoters all over the tri-state area. \nNew Jersey’s The Star-Ledger called them “one of the leading lights of the New Jersey pop underground. The group’s amalgam of punk\, guitar-folk\, lo-fi experimentalism\, imagist-inspired poetry (drawing heavily on Sella’s upbringing in the Jersey suburbs) and playful humor (that betrays the singer’s youth) has caught discriminating ears on both sides of the Hudson.” \nThey’ve played Bamboozle\, opened for artists as varied as pop chanteuse Vanessa Carlton and Jersey cohorts Titus Andronicus. \n“We kinda thought we were a punk band but then we’d play on bills with real punk bands and we’d be like ‘Whoa\, were not punks\,” says Mathew. “What the hell are we?” \nWe can’t wait to find out the convoluted answer to that question.
